Chronic Back
Pain
Among the
types of back pain, chronic back pain
has affected millions of people all over the world. Not
only the old but mainly people of all walks of life have
suffered chronic back pain.
Chronic back
pain is pain felt when there is no biological reason for
pain to continue. It is pain lasting for more than three
to six months after all therapies and medication have
been used but still of no relief. If this happens to you,
inform your physician right
away.
To understand
how chronic back pain occurs, understand first what your
back is all about. Our back is made up of bones, muscles,
ligaments and tendons. It is interlaced with arteries,
veins and capillaries originating from the heart and
nerves coming from the spinal cord. That is why when we
make the wrong movement that is not in coordination with
our back it will have a reaction. It is important to keep
your back in proper position so that potential injury can
be avoided. Exercise is also needed to help your back in
shape to overcome sudden movements that may cause harm
not only to your back but to your body as
well.
According to
research, chronic back pain has been one of the most
significant medical problems of people today. It is one
of the top 5 reasons why patients see a doctor. Chronic
back pain also results to more lost work days than having
a common cold. It affects both men and women regardless
of ethnicity. More research shows that chronic back pain
ranks as 6th in total dollars spent on medical care as
well as the 5th most common cause of hospitalization and
the 3rd most common reason to have surgery. This research
alone tells you that a simple back pain can lead to more
damage than one actually
expects.
Chronic back
pain can affect or felt in the cervical or neck region,
the thoracic or in the lower back and lumbar area. This
is because the weight of the top part of the body rests
on the lumbar region and this area is used mainly for
sitting, bending thus where chronic back pain happens.
There are many factors why chronic back pains occur. It
could be because of age, an injury or slipped disc that
had happened when they were young or simply because there
is a degeneration of the spinal bones caused by
osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. However, degeneration of
the spinal bones does not happen to a person until they
are over 60 years of age.
If you are
experiencing chronic back pain for a long period of time,
it is better to see a doctor. There are many options for
treatments so it is better that you address the pain
immediately. Understanding what chronic back pain is all
about will help you avoid unwanted injuries that can be
related to back pain in the future. Though options are
available, it’s good to have a doctor’s opinion to avoid
side effects of any medications or treatments that you
may want to have.
